Respect Property

Do not steal or deprive others of their rightful property.

Overview

The fourth Noahide Law prohibits taking what belongs to another without their consent. This law upholds the dignity of ownership and the social trust upon which all civilization depends.

What It Prohibits

• Stealing money, property, or any item belonging to another
• Robbery — taking property by force or threat
• Fraud and deception in business transactions
• Kidnapping — the theft of a person's freedom
• Rape or Coercion - forcing someone to do something against their will
• Withholding wages or payment owed to another

Deeper Understanding

Theft is not merely a financial crime — it is a violation of another person's autonomy and dignity. When we steal, we declare that our desire is more important than another's rights. This corrodes trust, fractures communities, and ultimately undermines the social order that the seventh law is meant to protect.

The prohibition extends beyond physical goods. Intellectual property, reputation, and time can all be "stolen." The spirit of this law calls for complete honesty and integrity in all dealings.

Practical Observance

A Noahide should conduct all business with scrupulous honesty — accurate weights and measures, fair prices, honest contracts, and prompt payment. Returning lost property and refusing to benefit from stolen goods are positive expressions of this law.
