Respect Human Life

Do not take an innocent human life.

Overview

The third Noahide Law forbids the deliberate killing of any innocent human being. Every person is created in the image of God (tzelem Elohim), and therefore every human life holds infinite, irreplaceable worth.

What It Prohibits

• Intentional murder of any innocent person
• Hiring or commanding another person to commit murder
• Causing the death of an innocent person through deliberate negligence
• Abortion in most circumstances (subject to rabbinic guidance)
• Not Saving a person in times of Danger

Deeper Understanding

The Torah states: "Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for in the image of God He made man" (Genesis 9:6). This verse is the scriptural source of the Noahide prohibition of murder and underscores its gravity.

Because human beings bear the divine image, an attack on a person is, in a sense, an affront to God Himself. This is why murder is not merely a crime against society — it is a sin of the highest order against the Creator.

Practical Observance

Beyond refraining from violence, a Noahide is encouraged to actively protect innocent life wherever possible. This includes supporting just laws, opposing violence, and cultivating a deep respect for the lives of all people regardless of background.
