Respect All Creatures

Do not eat flesh torn from a living animal.

Overview

The sixth Noahide Law — known in Hebrew as Ever Min HaChai ("a limb from a living creature") — forbids eating meat that has been removed from an animal while it is still alive.

What It Prohibits

• Eating a limb, organ, or flesh cut from a living animal
• Consuming blood that flows from a living animal in certain contexts
• Any act of deliberate, gratuitous cruelty toward animals

Deeper Understanding

This law was given to Noah immediately after the flood, when God first permitted humanity to eat meat (Genesis 9:4). The condition was clear: life must be respected even in the act of taking it. An animal must be properly slaughtered before its flesh is consumed — not torn apart alive.

Beyond the specific prohibition, this law carries a broader message: sensitivity to the suffering of living creatures is a mark of moral character. A person who is callous toward animals will likely become callous toward people.

Practical Observance

A Noahide should ensure that any meat consumed comes from an animal that was humanely and properly slaughtered. Beyond this minimum, cultivating a general ethic of kindness toward all living creatures — avoiding unnecessary harm and not tolerating wanton cruelty — reflects the deepest spirit of this law.
