Parasha Vayakhel

Moses assembles Israel and the people donate with overwhelming generosity to build the Tabernacle.

Overview

Parasha Vayakhel opens with Moses reminding Israel of the Sabbath — even the holy work of building the Tabernacle does not override Shabbat. He then calls for donations. The response is extraordinary: men and women bring gold, silver, copper, fine fabrics, skins, wood, oil, and spices.

The Story

The people bring so much that Moses has to tell them to stop — there is more than enough. The craftsmen Bezalel and Oholiab, filled with divine wisdom and skill, oversee the construction of the Tabernacle, the Ark, the Menorah, the altars, and all the furnishings exactly as God commanded.

Significance for Noahides

The generosity of the people in building the Tabernacle stands in sharp contrast to the Golden Calf. After their great sin, they channel their energy into something holy. The Tabernacle is built not by forced labor but by willing hearts — a model of community service motivated by love rather than obligation.
