Parasha Nitzavim

"You are all standing today" — the covenant renewed with every generation, and the call to choose life.

Overview

Parasha Nitzavim is one of the shortest but most profound parashot in the Torah. It renews the covenant with all of Israel — including those not yet born — and contains the Torah's most direct and passionate call to choose life, goodness, and God.

The Story

Moses gathers all of Israel — leaders, elders, officers, children, women, and the stranger within the camp — and declares that they are all entering into the covenant with God. The covenant extends to all future generations: "Not with you alone do I make this covenant... but with those who are standing here today and with those who are not here today." Moses promises that even after exile and suffering, if Israel returns to God, He will restore them. Then comes the climax: "I have placed before you life and death, blessing and curse — choose life, so that you and your children may live."

Significance for Noahides

"Choose life" — this is the Torah's ultimate message to all humanity. The covenant is not merely historical; it is renewed in every generation, with every person who chooses to align themselves with God's ways. For Noahides, this parasha affirms that the path of righteousness is always available, always accessible, and always the path to life and blessing.

"I have placed before you life and death, blessing and curse — choose life, so that you and your children may live." — Deuteronomy 30:19
